While Guyana is not technically part of the Caribbean, the English-speaking country is culturally connected to the region.

The capital of Guyana is Georgetown, located on the coast. Georgetown is nicknamed the โ€œGarden City of the Caribbeanโ€ due to its urban forests and dedicated green spaces.

The rest of Guyana is also largely lush and green. Around ninety percent of the countryโ€™s landmass is covered by the Amazon Rainforest โ€” the largest rainforest in the world. Because of this, it has a very high level of biodiversity and is home to undiscovered and rare species like the harpy eagle and giant otter.

The countryโ€™s landscape also includes a marshy coastal plain (where most of the population lives), savannas, and mountains. The highest point in Guyana is Mount Roraima on the Guyana-Brazil-Venezuela border. Four rivers of more than 200 miles long flow through the country. The longest is the Essequibo River, at more than 600 miles long. The second-longest, the Courentyne River, forms the border with Suriname.

Guyanaโ€™s climate is tropical, with hot and humid weather all year round. It has two rainy seasons, from late April through mid-August and mid-November through mid-January. The amount of rainfall varies depending on location. However, it is wet everywhere between May and August.

Guyana is a unitary multiparty republic in which the President is both the head of the state and the head of the government. Executive power is exercised by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister and other cabinet members.
