Europe

Map of Europe with country flags

The continent of Europe is located in the Northern Hemisphere. Most of it also lies in the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe shares its continental landmass with Asia and Africa, bounded by the Arctic Ocean to the north, Asia to the east, the Mediterranean Sea and Africa to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Europe is the second-smallest continent after Oceania. It includes 44 countries plus the dependencies and other sovereign states of the Åland Islands, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Jan Mayen, and Svalbard. The United Nations Geoscheme groups these countries and territories into four regions of Europe: Northern Europe, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, and Western Europe.

Europe’s landscape is varied, ranging from the cityscapes of London and Paris and the colorful Amalfi coast to fjords in Norway and Southern Europe’s Alps to Iceland’s Mars-like terrain. Some of the continent’s most iconic landmarks include the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel, the Eiffel Tower in France, and Stonehenge in the United Kingdom. Europe is also home to the Colosseum, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and the sites of two Ancient Wonders of the World, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia and the Colossus of Rhodes, both of which were in Greece.

The Council of Europe and the European Union are two organizations that were established to represent Europe politically. Both organizations share the same values in terms of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, but they perform different roles.
