Bolivia has two capital cities: Sucre, which sits in the country’s southern highlands, and La Paz, the country’s administrative capital. Bolivia’s Declaration of Independence from Spain was signed in Sucre in 1825. Due to the country’s colonial past, Spain is one of the 35 official languages in Bolivia, as well as various indigenous languages, including Aymara, Quechua and Chiquitano

La Paz is the world’s highest capital city and sits at an elevation of 3,640 meters in the Andes. The aerial cable car system is a popular way to view the city; the system is the world’s largest urban cable car network.

There are three main geographic regions in Bolivia: the Andean region, the Sub-Andean region and the Llanos region. The Andean region features the Cordillera Occidental section of the Andes Mountain range and the Cordillera Central mountain range. The region is home to some of the highest points in the Americas. The Sub-Andean region covers the central and southern areas of Bolivia and is largely used for agriculture. The Llanos region in the northeast is mainly flat with small plateaus.

Bolivia has a humid tropical climate with hot, rainy summers and muggy, warm winters. The coldest region is the west, which frequently experiences snow in the mountains. La Paz has a cool climate due to its high altitude in the mountains. The eastern region tends to be the warmest area of Bolivia and experiences significant rainfall due to the wind coming from the Amazon rainforest.
