Vanuatuโ€™s capital and largest city is Port Vila, on the island of Efate. Its second-largest city is Luganville, on the island of Espiritu Santo. Espiritu Santo and Malakula are the largest islands.ย

While some of Vanuatuโ€™s smaller islands are low-lying (including one which is a coral atoll), most islands are largely forested and mountainous with narrow, rocky coastal plains. The highest point in the country is Mount Tabwemasana, which rises more than 1,859 meters (6,100 ft) on the island of Espiritu Santo. Vanuatu also has several active volcanoes, including Mount Yasur on the island of Tanna. Mount Yasur is one of the worldโ€™s most accessible active volcanoes and is an important part of the countryโ€™s tourism industry.

The climate of Vanuatu varies depending on the region. The northern islands experience an equatorial climate with hot, rainy weather all year round, while the central and southern islands experience a tropical climate with a hot, rainy season and a cooler, dry season. The rainy season runs from December through March, and the dry season runs from May through October. Natural disasters are a problem for the country. In addition to volcanic eruptions, it is also prone to cyclones.

Vanuatu is a parliamentary democracy with a President and a Prime Minister. The President serves as the head of the state with primarily ceremonial powers, and the Prime Minister is the head of the government.
