Most of Papua New Guinea is mountainous and covered in tropical rainforests. The Papuan Peninsula, the easternmost point of New Guinea, is often called ‘Bird’s Tail’ as its extended shape resembles the tail of a bird-of-paradise.

The majority of Papua New Guinea’s population lives in rural areas. There are over 35 uncontacted tribes in the country, many of which maintain hunter-gatherer lifestyles. It’s believed over 800 different languages are spoken in the country, most of which are indigenous Papuan languages. English is used in the education system and by the government and courts.

Some of the major cities in Papua New Guinea include Lae (capital of the northern Morobe province), Mount Hagen (capital of the western Highlands), and Arawa (on the southeast coast of Bougainville Island).

Papua New Guinea has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather. The country’s wet season usually runs from December to March, and the dry season is from June to September. Points of higher elevations, such as Mount Wilhelm (the highest point in the country), often see snow.

Papua New Guinea has a  parliamentary representative democratic multi-party system. The country’s prime minister serves as head of government. As an independent commonwealth realm, the British monarch acts as head of state, and a governor-general serves as their representative. The governor-general is nominated by the National Parliament and appointed by the monarch.
