The United States of America (commonly referred to as the US or USA) is a country in North America. The country is one of the largest in the world in terms of land mass and population. It shares borders with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.

Country Profile

There are 50 states in the United States; 49 of which (including Alaska) are located on the North American continent. The exception is Hawaii – an island state in the Pacific Ocean – which is around 2,000 miles (3,219 km) from the United States mainland. Hawaii, as well as Alaska – the largest and northernmost state in the United States – are referred to as non-contiguous states, meaning they don’t share a border with any other US state.

The climate in the United States is incredibly diverse. Some states, such as Florida and Hawaii, have tropical conditions, while others, such as Alaska, have a subarctic climate. Areas with higher elevations, such as the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada, have alpine conditions.

The United States is famous for its entertainment industries, particularly Hollywood films, television shows, and several genres of music (such as jazz, rock, and rap). The country has also birthed various tech giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple. Several popular social media companies, such as Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter), are also based here.

Millions of tourists travel from all over the world each year to see iconic US landmarks and visit the bustling cities. Some of the most famous landmarks include the Statue of Liberty in New York City, the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, and the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
