Managua, the country’s largest city, lies on the southern shore of Lake Managua and is the capital of Nicaragua. Other major cities in the country include LeΓ³n, Granada, and Masaya.

The Spanish colonized Nicaragua in 1522 and established their first permanent settlement two years later. Mosquito Coast, an area along the country’s eastern coast, was an English protectorate from 1638 until 1707 and a British protectorate from 1707 until 1787. Nicaragua is the only country in Latin America colonized by the British and the Spanish. The United States occupied Nicaragua from 1909 until 1933.

Along with Mosquito Coast, Nicaragua has two other distinct geographic regions: the Pacific lowlands and the Amerrisque Mountains in the north-central highlands. MogotΓ³n is the highest point in Nicaragua and stands 2,085 meters (6,841 ft) above sea level. The mountain straddles the border between Nicaragua and Honduras in the Reserva Nacional Cordillera Dipilto y Jalapa nature reserve.

The country has a tropical climate with hot and humid weather throughout the year. The dry season lasts from November until April, and the wet season typically lasts from May until October. The north-central highlands have lower temperatures than the Pacific lowlands.

Nicaragua is a presidential republic with a president who serves as head of state and head of government. Each presidential term length lasts five years and can be renewed indefinitely.
