During his exploration of the Americas, Colombus landed on the island of Jamaica (then called ‘Xaymaca’ by the indigenousΒ TaΓno people). Colombus colonized the island on behalf of the Spanish in 1494 and called it Santiago. The island remained a Spanish colony until 1655, when the English conquered it and renamed it Jamaica. The country gained independence from Great Britain in 1962.

Since 1962, Jamaica has been an independent Commonwealth realm. The British monarch serves as Jamaica’s head of state and appoints a governor-general to act as their representative on the island. Jamaica’s prime minister serves as the country’s head of government.

Kingston is Jamaica’s capital and sits on the island’s southeastern coast. The city was founded in 1692 and is now the largest predominantly English-speaking city in the Caribbean. Other major cities in Jamaica include Portmore and Montego Bay.

Jamaica has a tropical climate with hot weather throughout the year. The island’s dry season runs from December through to May, and the wet season lasts from June to November. Jamaica sits in the Atlantic Ocean’s hurricane belt and is sometimes affected by severe storms.

The island is very mountainous, with around half the island sitting over 330 meters above sea level. The highest mountain in Jamaica is Blue Mountain Peak, which has an elevation of 2,256 meters.
