The countryโ€™s capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunciรณn, also known as Guatemala City. The city is the site of the ancient Mayan city Kaminalijuyu, which was founded around 1500 BC.

Guatemalaโ€™s landscape is mostly mountainous, with the largely uninhabited Petรฉn lowlands in the north, the Guatemalan highlands in the middle, and the Pacific coast flatlands in the south. The countryโ€™s major cities are situated in the highlands and coastal regions.

The climate of Guatemala is tropical, with a dry season from November through April and a rainy season from May through October. From the end of August, the country experiences intense rainfall.

Due to its location between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Guatemala is prone to hurricanes. It also lies along the boundary between two tectonic plates, which has caused several major earthquakes. The country also has four active volcanoes and is at risk from volcanic activity caused by the Middle America Trench โ€” a major subduction zone off the Pacific coast.

Guatemala is a constitutional democratic republic whereby the President is both the head of the state and the head of the government.
