Spain’s capital, Madrid, is the country’s largest and most populous city. Other notable cities include its art, music, and culture capital, Barcelona, and Seville, famous for flamenco dancing.
Spain is a largely mountainous country. Mount Teide, on the Canary island of Tenerife, is the highest peak in Spain and the third-highest volcano in the world. However, the Pyrenees β€” located in the north of the country and stretching for more than 400 kilometers β€” is arguably the country’s most famous mountain range. Spain also has thousands of kilometers of coastline, attracting millions of tourists yearly to popular beach resorts on the Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, and Costa del Sol.
Most of mainland Spain experiences a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The mountainous regions, however, can see more rainfall and heavy snow during winter. Meanwhile, the Canary Islands have a reputation for being consistently hot and sunny, making them popular with tourists all year round.
Spain is governed under a constitutional monarchy. While the king or queen is the official head of state, their powers are limited, as the legislative branch is the primary governing body.
