The north of Russia is bordered mostly by the Arctic Ocean, and the country has one of the longest coastlines in the world. It shares land borders with 14 countries: North Korea, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia to the south and Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Norway to the east.
Russiaโ€™s capital is Moscow, the countryโ€™s largest city. Its second-largest city is Saint Petersburg. These cities are home to some of the countryโ€™s most famous landmarks, such as the Kremlin, Saint Basilโ€™s Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the Winter Palace of Peter the Great, and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood.
There are nine major mountain ranges in Russia. One of these mountain ranges is the Caucasus Mountains, which contains Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe. Russia is also home to Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake in the world, and the Volga River, the longest river in Europe.
Russiaโ€™s climate varies due to its vast size. Much of the country only experiences two seasons: winter and summer. Winters range from cool along the Black Sea coast to subarctic in Siberia, while summers are warm in the south and cool along the Arctic coast.
Russia is a symmetric federal republic with a semi-presidential system. The President is the head of state, and the Prime Minister is the head of the government. All constituent states possess equal powers.
