The capital of North Macedonia is Skopje which is in the north of the country. The city sits on the upper course of the Vardar River โ€” North Macedoniaโ€™s longest river. The Vadar rises in the ล ar Mountains in the northwest and travels south, dissecting the country as it makes its way through Greece before emptying into the Aegean Sea.

Mountains frame North Macedonia along its borders. The highest mountain in the country is Mount Korab in the ล ar Mountain range (a continuation of the Dinaric Alps, which cover much of Southern Europe). The countryโ€™s other major mountain range is the Osogovo-Belasica. North Macedoniaโ€™s landscape also consists of three large lakes. Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa lie on the countryโ€™s southwestern border with Albania, and Dorjan Lake lies on the southeastern border with Greece.

North Macedonia experiences a mostly continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold and snowy. Spring and fall are the rainiest seasons. North Macedonia is seismically active and experiences frequent earthquakes of varying magnitudes.

North Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy with a President and a Prime Minister. The President is the head of the state, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and the President of the State Security Council. However, their duties are mostly ceremonial. The Prime Minister, as the head of the government, holds most of the executive power.
