Monaco is divided into nine administrative wards. The largest by area is Monte Carlo, and the most populous is Larvotto. The capital is Monaco City, where most of the country’s political and judicial institutions are located.

At just two square kilometers (0.77 square miles), Monaco is the world’s second-smallest country after Vatican City. Situated on the French Riviera — a region that attracts wealthy tourists with its high-end beach resorts — Monaco is nicknamed the “Playground of the Rich and Famous”. It is best known for luxury hotels and restaurants, designer shopping, the Monte Carlo Casino, and the annual Formula One Grand Prix racing event. Almost all of the country is built up, and it has no agricultural industry. Fishing is Monaco’s only natural resource.

Monaco has a temperate Mediterranean climate. Summers are dry and warm, while winters are wet and mild. Monaco’s winters are unusually mild, considering the country’s latitude.

Monaco operates under a constitutional monarchy. The Prime Minister is the head of the government, and the Sovereign Prince of Monaco is the head of the state.
