Athens, one of the world’s oldest cities, is the capital of Greece. The city still features remnants of the Ancient Greek Empire, such as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Panathenaic Stadium. Other major cities in Greece include Thessaloniki (on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea) and Patras, the regional capital of Western Greece.

Most of Greece’s population speaks Greek, which has several regional dialects. The country’s most commonly spoken foreign languages include English, German, French, and Italian.

Greece has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Coastal areas are cooled by the sea breeze, and the western region usually experiences more rainfall than the rest of the country. The Pindus and Rhodope mountain ranges have a cooler Alpine Mediterranean climate, with harsh, snowy winters and cool summers.

As a parliamentary representative democratic republic, Greece has a president who serves as head of state and a prime minister who is the head of government. The country had a monarchy from 1832 until it was abolished following a referendum in 1924. In 1935, the monarchy was restored until it was abolished for a second time in 1973, following another referendum.
