Germany is a country in the western region of Central Europe. It’s the second-most populous country in Europe, after Russia, and the most populous country in the European Union (EU). Nine countries border Germany: Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic in the east, Switzerland and Austria to the south, France in the southwest, and Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands in the west.

Germany is a Federal Democracy and is led by the Bundestag (the parliament of Germany). In 1958, West Germany was a founding member of the European Community, which later became the EU. Germany is also a member of the Schengen Area and the eurozone.
