The largest city in Czechia and the country’s capital is Prague. Nicknamed the “City of a Hundred Spires”, Prague is renowned for its striking architecture. Some of the city’s most beautiful buildings include St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, and the Old Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock.

There are many of castles and chateaus in the rest of Czechia, too. The Český Krumlov Castle complex in the south of the country is a major tourist attraction, as is Karlštejn Castle just outside Prague. Aside from historic buildings, Czechia’s landscape is dominated by low mountains and hills; it is almost completely surrounded by mountains. The Sudetes Mountains are situated in the north of the country, along the Czechia-Poland border, the Carpathian Mountains can be found in the southeast, along the Czechia-Slovakia border, and the Sumava Mountains form part of the border with Germany in the southwest.

Czechia’s mountain ranges protect it from the harsh winters neighboring countries experience. The climate of Czechia is largely temperate, continental, and oceanic. Temperatures are warm during the summer months and it is cold and cloudy in winter. The coldest months are December, January, and February. At this time of year, snow can fall in the cities and lowlands as well as in the mountains.

Czechia is a republic that operates under a parliamentary system of government. It has a President, who is the formal head of the state, and a Prime Minister, who is the head of the government.
