Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital and largest city is Sarajevo. The city lies on the banks of the Miljacka River and is surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. Much of its terrain is hilly, consisting of steep streets and houses built into the hillsides.

The Diniric Alps cover most of Bosnia and Herzegovina, meaning the country’s landscape is largely mountainous. The south has the highest mountains, including Maglić, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s highest peak. In contrast, the north is mostly flat with some hills. The landscape also consists of forests, covering almost half the country, and rivers. While the Miljacka River is significant in that it runs through the country’s capital, it is relatively short, flowing for just 21 kilometers.

The longest river in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Sava, which flows for 345 kilometers along the border with Croatia. The longest river to flow entirely through Bosnia and Herzegovina is the country’s namesake, the Bosna River.

The climate of Bosnia and Herzegovina varies depending on the location. The coastal region has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters, and the northern areas have a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. However, most of the country experiences a cold mountain climate due to the domination of the Dinaric Alps.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a parliamentary representative democracy. The government is headed by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, who is appointed by the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina — a body consisting of three members — serves as the head of the state.
