Belgium (officially the Kingdom of Belgium) is a country in Northwestern Europe. It’s one of the smallest countries in Europe, with a land area of just 30,688 kmΒ². Belgium is bordered by the Netherlands to the north and Germany to the east. It also shares borders with Luxembourg to the southeast and France to the southwest.Β

There are three official languages in Belgium: Dutch, German and French. Dutch is the primary language spoken in Belgium and is mainly spoken by the Flemish community in the country’s northern area. French is the primary language in the Wallonia region. German is the least spoken official language, mainly spoken by the small German community in East Belgium.

Belgium has a maritime temperate climate with cool, damp winters and mild summers. The Flanders region generally experiences the country’s warmest weather, while the Ardennes region in southeast Belgium is the coldest.

The highest point in Belgium is Signal de Botrange, a large plateau in Wallonia. It has an elevation of 694 meters. The longest river to flow through the country is the Meuse, of which 183 kilometersΒ  of the total 925 km length flows through the country.

Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is the the administrative centre of the European Union (EU). Some of the most famous landmarks in the city include The Atomium, the Grand Place, and the Manneken Pis.

Belgium’s monarch is the head of state, and the country’s prime minister is the head of government. Belgium adopted a federal structure between 1970 and 1993 and is now composed of communities and regions.
