Minsk, which lies on the Svislach and Nyamiha rivers, is the capital of Belarus. Other major cities in Belarus include Barysaw, Salihorsk, and Maladzyechna.

Belarus was ruled by the Russian Empire from the end of the 18th century. Following this, the country briefly became a National Republic in 1918 before it became part of the Soviet Union in 1922. From 1941 to 1944, Belarus was occupied by the Nazis. During this time, a significant number of towns and cities within the country were destroyed, and Belarus lost much of its economic resources. It’s estimated a quarter of the country’s population perished during this period, and it wasn’t until 1971 that the population of Belarus reached its pre-war level.

The country declared its sovereignty in 1990 and independence from the Soviet Union the following year. Belarus currently has an authoritarian government, often described as Europe’s last dictatorship. The president of Belarus serves as the head of state, while a ceremonial prime minister (elected by the president) heads the government.

Most of Belarus has flat terrain, with around 70% of the country having heights of under 200 meters. The highest point in Belarus is Dzyarzhynskaya Hara, a hill in the west of the country that stands 345 meters (1,130 ft) above sea level.

Belarus has a moderate continental climate characterized by warm summers and cold winters. Heavy rainfall tends to occur during summer. December and January are the most humid months, while February is usually the driest.
