Albania is a republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. The country’s constitution saw significant change over the last century. Albania was constituted as a monarchy in 1913 before becoming a republic in 1925 and an authoritarian monarchy three years later. In the following decades, a puppet state was formed, followed by a communist one-party state, before finally forming a multi-party system.
