Yemen’s capital and largest city is Sanaa, which is in the west-central part of the country. With an elevation of 7,500 feet, Sanaa is one of the world’s highest capital cities. Jabal An-Nabi Shu’ayb and Jabal Tiyal β€” the highest mountains in Yemen and the highest on the Arabian Peninsula β€” are located close to the city.

The country’s landscape also consists of flat coastal plains in the west and part of the Rub al Khali desert in the north. It also has several volcanoes, some of which are extinct while others are active. The volcanic island group of Jebel Zubair, for example, experienced eruptions in 2011 and 2013.

The climate of Yemen is largely arid and sub-tropical. Temperatures in the highlands are lower than they are along the coast. In the highlands, there are two distinct rainy seasons, which run from April through May and July through September. The coastal areas receive most of the rainfall during winter, while rain is rare in the central regions.

Nominally, Yemen is a semi-presidential republic with a President who is the head of the state and a Prime Minister who is the head of the government. However, there has been no central government with full control over the country since 2014, when the Yemeni civil war broke out.
