The country’s main cities are Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in the south. Hanoi is the capital city, and Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city.

Forests dominate the landscape of Vietnam, with rainforest covering almost half the country’s land area. It is also largely mountainous. The highest point is Fansipan Mountain in northwestern Vietnam, which rises 10,312 feet above sea level. The north is also home to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its towering limestone islands.

Vietnam’s territory also includes thousands of islands. The largest of these is Phú Quốc, which lies off the west coast near Cambodia. The seventh-longest river in Asia, the Mekong, flows through Vietnam. It enters the country at the town of Tân Châu on the border with Cambodia and flows south to empty into the South China Sea near the city of Mỹ Tho.

Vietnam’s climate varies from subtropical in the north to sub-tropical in the center and south. The country has two monsoon seasons. The southwest monsoon runs from May through October, bringing heavy rainfall to the north and south — but not the central regions, which are protected by mountains. The northeast monsoon runs from October through April, bringing heavy rainfall to the eastern coast and light and frequent showers to the north. Vietnam is prone to flooding due to the vast amount of rainfall it receives during the monsoon seasons. Other natural disasters that can affect the country include tropical cyclones and typhoons.

Vietnam is a one-party socialist republic that operates under an authoritarian system of government. It has a President who is the head of the state, a Prime Minister who is the head of the government, and a General Secretary who is the leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).
