Syriaโ€™s capital city is Damascus. Founded in the 3rd millennium BCE, Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the world. The country is also home to Aleppo, which was founded around 5000 BCE.

Syriaโ€™s landscape is dominated by the Syrian Desert, which covers more than half the country. Syria also has mountains in the west and south. The highest mountain in the country is Mount Hermon, in the Anti-Lebanon mountain range. Syriaโ€™s longest river is the Euphrates, which flows through the country from Turkey and into Iraq. The Euphrates River is the longest river in Western Asia. A dam built on the river led to the creation of Lake Assad โ€” Syriaโ€™s largest lake.

The climate of Syria is varied, ranging from Mediterranean along the coast to arid subtropical in the interior. During summer, it is hot and sunny throughout the country, with the coast experiencing higher humidity. Winters are mild in the coastal regions and cold in the interior. During spring, strong winds from the south can cause sandstorms.
