Riyadh is Saudi Arabiaโ€™s capital and largest city. The countryโ€™s other important urban areas are Mecca and Medina โ€” Islamโ€™s two holiest cities and popular pilgrim destinations.

Most of Saudi Arabia is covered by the Arabian Desert, the worldโ€™s fifth-largest desert. Aside from the desert, the countryโ€™s landscape consists of shrubland, dry, grassy plains, lakes, volcanic lava fields, mountains, and more than 2,000 dormant volcanoes. The highest point is Mount Sawda in the southwest province of Asir.

Saudi Arabia has a mostly desert climate. In the summer, temperatures are high during the day but plummet at night. In the winter, temperatures rarely drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (zero degrees Celsius) except in the northern regions and in the mountains, which can receive snowfall.

Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy with no political parties or national elections. The King is the head of the government and the Commander-in-Chief of the military. The King appoints a Crown Prince to assist with his duties and governs with the help of the Council of Ministers.
