Muscat is Oman’s capital and largest city. The city is located along the northern coast, at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. Jebel Shams, which forms part of the Hajar mountain range, is the highest point in Oman. On the south coast, the country’s other mountain range is Qara or Dhofar. Most of Oman’s landscape consists of gravel desert, covering most of the interior. It also includes beaches, fjords, gorges, and caves.

Oman is one of the hottest countries in the world. Its climate is mostly tropical desert, with hot and humid coastal areas and a hot, dry interior. In the mountains, the climate is sub-tropical semi-arid. Rainfall is rare in the country. What rain it does get falls mainly in the north, during December through April. The monsoon also brings some rain to the mountain areas between June and September. Very occasionally, snow will fall in the mountains.

Oman is an absolute monarchy, with a Sultan who is both the head of the state and the head of the government.
