North Korea

North Korea, officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is a country in East Asia. The country occupies the northern region of the Korean peninsula, while South Korea occupies the southern region. The two countries are separated by the Korean Demilitarized Zone. North Korea also borders China and Russia to the north. The Yellow Sea borders North Korea to the west, and the Sea of Japan borders it to the east.

Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea and one of the country’s oldest cities, founded in approximately 1122 BC. Other major cities in the country include Hamhung, Chongjin, and Sinuiju.

The country has a continental climate with a cold winter lasting from December to March and warm weather from June to September. The summer tends to be the rainiest and most humid time of year.

North Korea is very mountainous with deep, narrow valleys. The highest point in the country is Mount Paektu, which stands 2,744 meters (9,003 ft) tall. The mountain straddles the Chinese–North Korean border and is known as Changbai Mountain in China. Janggun Peak is the highest peak on the mountain and stands on the North Korean side of the border.

North Korea has a totalitarian hereditary dictatorship led by the Kim family. The official state philosophy is Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism, which believes that true socialism and an independent state can only be achieved through self-reliance. North Korea is often considered the most isolated and secretive country as a result. The country is led by a supreme leader who holds the title of President of the State Affairs and First Chairman of the National Defence Commission.
