There are 26 atolls (ring-shaped islands) and around 1,190 coral islands in the Maldives, although only 200 are inhabited. The country’s capital, Malé, is home to the president’s official residence and was historically called the ‘King’s Island’.

The Maldives is a democratic republic with a president who serves as the head of government and the head of state. The country was a self-governing British protectorate from 1887 until its independence in 1965. The country joined the Commonwealth in 1982 and left in 2016. However, it rejoined in 2020.

In 1153, the country became a Sultanate, and the monarch was given the title of Sultan. Following the Maldives’ independence in 1965, the monarch adopted the title of ‘King’. However, the monarchy was abolished just three years later after a national referendum.

There is a humid, tropical climate in the Maldives. The islands have hot weather throughout the year with little seasonal variation. The wet season typically lasts from April or May, and the dry season lasts the rest of the year.

The Maldives is predominately flat. Mount Villingili is the highest point in the Maldives, with an elevation of just 5 meters (17 ft). There are no rivers or lakes on any of the islands or atolls. This means most of the country’s drinking water has been desalinated.
