The capital of Laos is Vientiane, the countryโ€™s largest city. It is also its economic center. This is partly due to the surrounding rice fields and because of the cityโ€™s location on the Mekong River โ€” which the country relies heavily on for transportation.

The Mekong River is Asiaโ€™s seventh-longest river. It enters Laos from China, forming the border with Myanmar and part of the border with Thailand before flowing southward through Cambodia and Vietnam and draining into the South China Sea. Some of Laosโ€™s other notable landmarks include Kuang Si Falls in Luang Prabang, the countryโ€™s highest mountain, Phou Bia, and the 4000 islands, an archipelago in the Mekong River near the Cambodian border.

Laosโ€™s climate is tropical. It has two distinct seasons: the dry season from November through April and the rainy season from May through October.

Along with China, Cuba, Vietnam, and North Korea, Laos is one of the worldโ€™s five communist states. The country is a one-party parliamentary socialist republic with a President who is the head of the state and a Prime Minister who is the head of the government.
