The country’s five main islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. Tokyo, the capital city, is located on Honshu. It is the country’s largest and most populous city in the world. Tokyo’s most famous landmark is the Tokyo Tower, but the city is also known for being home to the Shibuya Crossing, the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, and the quirky district of Harajuku. Japan’s other large cities include Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto. Kyoto is famous for its geisha district, Gion.

About three-quarters of Japan’s landmass is mountainous. Mount Fuji is the country’s most famous landmark, an active volcano 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Japan lies on the western edge of the Ring of Fire, a chain of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. About ten percent of the world’s active volcanoes are found in Japan, and the country is prone to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

Japan has four main seasons with a climate that ranges from subarctic to subtropical. Japan’s cherry blossom season takes place during the spring, usually between March and April. At this time of year, cherry trees all over the country bloom, turning the landscape pink and white.

Japan is a sovereign state. However, the central government is the supreme authority, and the Emperor’s role is purely ceremonial. The Japanese monarchy is the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world.
