India is the seventh-largest country in the world by area, and the largest country in the world in terms of population, having overtaken China in 2023. Located in Southern Asia, it is bordered by the countries of China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north, Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east, and Pakistan to the west. The entire south of the country is bounded by the Indian Ocean.

Despite being three times smaller than China in terms of land area, India has a similar size population. New Delhi, India’s capital, is located in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It is the most populous city in India and the largest by area. Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is India’s financial and commercial center. It is the home of Bollywood β€” India’s multi-billion dollar film industry β€” and its most famous monument is the iconic Gateway of India.
In addition to its densely populated urban areas, India’s landscape consists of the Himalayan Mountain Range β€” which contains Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain β€” thousands of kilometers of coastline, sprawling deserts, tropical rainforests, and hundreds of rivers, including the sacred Ganges.
While India’s climate is diverse, most of the country experiences a tropical climate. The northern mountainous regions, however, experience year-round snow and can be extremely cold.
India is a constitutional republic with a parliamentary system. The head of the government, the Prime Minister, advises the President, who is the head of the state.
