Brunei

Brunei is a country in Southeast Asia. The country is located on the northern coast of the island of Borneo and is the only sovereign state on the island. The remainder of Borneo is divided between Malaysia and Indonesia. Brunei borders the South China Sea and shares its sole land border with Malaysia.

The Sultan of Brunei is one of only a few absolute monarchs in the world. The monarch has complete control of the government and serves as both the head of state and head of government. Brunei was a British protectorateΒ from 1888 until the country gained independence in 1984. During the Second World War, Brunei was occupied by the Japanese.

Bandar Seri Begawan, located on the northern bank of the Brunei River, is the capital of Brunei. The city is home to the seat of government and Istana Nurul Iman, the world’s largest residential palace.

Malay is the official language of Brunei, although the country’s variation differs from standard Malay. English is also widely spoken and is taught in schools.

Brunei has a tropical climate with hot, humid water throughout the year. Heavy rainfall occurs during the two monsoon seasons from October to February and May to June.
