The People’s Republic of Bangladesh, otherwise known as Bangladesh, is a country in South Asia. Bangladesh shares land borders withΒ MyanmarΒ to the southeast and India to the north, east, and west. Its southern coastline borders the Bay of Bengal.

Bangladesh’s capital is Dhaka, which sits north of the Buriganga River. Other major cities in the country include Chittagong, Khulna, and Sylhet. Some of the country’s most popular tourist attractions and landmarks are found in these cities, including Lalbag Fort in Dhaka, the Port of Chittagong, and Ratargul Swamp Forest in Sylhet.

The climate in Bangladesh is subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. January tends to be the coolest month of the year, while the rainiest months (April to September) tend to be the warmest, too.

Bangladesh is primarily a low-lying country with only one main hill system, the Chittagong Hills, which are located in southeastern Bangladesh. Saka Haphong is the highest point in Bangladesh, with an elevation of 1,052 meters.

The longest river in Bangladesh is the Brahmaputra, which has a total length of 2,900 km (1,802 miles). The river also flows through Tibet and neighboring Northeastern India.

Bangladesh is a democratic republic with a multi-party system. The prime minister is the head of government; the government and parliament have legislative power. Bangladesh’s president is the head of state and is appointed by parliament.

The official language in Bangladesh is Bangla/Bengali. Nearly 40 different languages are spoken throughout the country, including indigenous languages such as Garo,Β Meitei, and Kokborok.
