Manama, which lies on the northeast end of Bahrain Island, is the country’s capital. Other major cities include Riffa in the Southern Governorate and Muharraq (located on MuharraqΒ Island), which served as the country’s capital until 1932. The Southern Governorate is the largest of the four governorates in Bahrain, although it has the smallest population.

Bahrain has an arid climate, with long, hot summers and mild winters. Rainfall is limited and irregular, mainly occurring in the winter. July tends to be the hottest month in the country, while January is the coldest.

Over 90% of Bahrain is covered in barren, low-lying desert. There are no permanent rivers or streams anywhere in the archipelago. Most of the country’s drinking water comes from water treated via desalination. The highest point in Bahrain is the Mountain of Smoke, a 134 meter hill in the Southern Governorate.Β

Some of the most popular tourist attractions and landmarks in Bahrain include the 19th-century Riffa Fort, the luxurious Amwaj Island (which boasts some of the best beaches in the country), and the bustling Manama Souq market.

Bahrain has a constitutional monarchy where the monarch appoints the government and the Consultative Council. In the past, members of the royal family have held political roles, including the position of prime minister.
