The capital of Tanzania is Dodoma. However, most government offices remain in Dar es Salaam, the country’s former capital. Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest city and principal port.

Tanzania is located in the African Great Lakes region. Three major lakes lie partially in Tanzania: Lake Victoria in the north, Lake Tanganyika in the west, and Lake Malawi in the south. The north of the country is densely forested and mountainous. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, can be found in northern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. The country’s interior is flat, consisting of plains and farmland. Tanzania’s Serengeti plains are some of Africa’s best-known savannas, home to a wide array of animal species, including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and more than two million wildebeest.

The climate of Tanzania ranges from tropical but not too hot in the central regions to hot and humid along the coast. The coastal area is especially hot and humid during the months of November through April. The rainy seasons run from October through December and March through May in the northern and coastal regions and from October through April in the southern, central, and western regions. The coolest and driest time of year is June through August.

Tanzania is a presidential constitutional republic. The country’s President serves as both the head of the state and the head of the government.
