The United Kingdom ruled Sudan from 1899 to 1956 as part of the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium. The country was divided into two regions: North Sudan and South Sudan. The latter gained independence from Sudan in 2011.

Khartoum is Sudan’s capital city, located at the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile rivers. The city was founded in 1821 and was initially used as an outpost for the Egyptian army before becoming a center for regional trade and the slave trade. Other major cities in Sudan include Omdurman, Khartoum North, and Nyala.

Sudan has a hyper-arid climate in the northern regions, transitioning to a tropical climate in the southwest. The central and northern regions have large deserts, such as the Nubian Desert and the Bayuda Desert. These regions are often affected by sandstorms that can temporarily block out the sun. Most of the south is covered in grasslands and tropical savanna.

The Deriba Caldera, a collapsed volcano, is the highest point in Sudan. It has an elevation of 3042 meters and is located in the Marrah Mountains in the country’s Darfur region.

The government of Sudan has varied considerably in the last few decades. Sudan previously had a president who served as head of state and head of government. The country later became a totalitarian state with a president and party who held complete political power. Sudan has held talks about transitioning to democracy.
