Unlike most other countries, South Africa has three capital cities rather than one. Cape Town is the legislative capital and seat of Parliament, Pretoria is the administrative capital, and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital. Despite this, it is actually Johannesburg which is the largest city in the country.
South Africa has a coastline that stretches 2,800 km (1,740 miles) from Nambia on the western coast to Mozambique on the northeast coast. There are few natural harbors along the coastline. South Africa is bordered by the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.
South Africa has a sub-tropical and temperate climate. The northwest region has hot weather and deserts, while the eastern coast has a subtropical climate. The Western Cape gets most of the country’s rainfall, particularly in the winter, but the rest of the country tends to get rainfall in the summer.
The country has vast grasslands, forests and deserts, and is famous for its national parks, such as the Addo Elephant National Park, Kruger National Park, and the Royal Natal National Park. The highest mountain in the country is Thabana Ntlenyana in the Drakensberg range, which measures 3,482 m (11,424 ft).
There are 11 official languages in South Africa: Ndebele, Pedi, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans, and English. In 2023, a 12th language (South African Sign Language) was officially recognized in the country.
