Senegal has a largely flat landscape, with a tropical region in the south and a desert region to the north. Swamps are also common in the southwest, and plateaus in the southeast.

Baunez Ridge is the highest point in Senegal, measuring 648 meters. The longest river in the country is the Senegal River, which has a total length of 1,800 kilometers.

Senegal has two distinct seasons: a dry season that usually lasts from October to May and a wet season from June through to September. The country has a warm and tropical climate, with warm to hot temperatures throughout the year.

French is the official language of Senegal, which is a lasting reminder of the country’s colonial past. However, the majority of the population doesn’t use French and instead speaks Wolof as their first or second language. Other common languages include Balanta-Ganja,Β Arabic, and Jola-Fonyi.

One of Senegal’s most famous landmarks is the bronze African Renaissance Monument statue on a hilltop just outside Dakar (the country’s capital). Lake Retba, north of the Cap Vert Peninsula, is also famous thanks to its distinct pink waters.

Senegal’s president acts as the head of state and head of government. The country currently has a democratic political culture and hasn’t experienced the economic or political corruption that has plagued many other countries in Africa.
