Kigali, located in central Rwanda, is the country’s capital. The city was founded in 1907 and became Rwanda’s capital in 1962, following the country’s independence. Other major cities in Rwanda include Gisenyi, Ruhengeri, and Butare.

The country became a territory of the German Empire in 1884 and became part of German East Africa. Following the First World War, Rwanda became a mandate territory of the League of Nations under Belgium’s rule. The territory, Ruanda-Urundi, became the two independent states of Rwanda and Burundi in 1962.

Most of Rwanda is hilly and mountainous. Mount Karisimbi, located in the Virunga Mountain Range, is the highest point in the country. The mountain has an elevation of 4,507 meters (14,787 ft). Rwanda also has a large number of lakes. The largest lake in the country is Lake Kivu (one of the African Great Lakes), which has an area of 2,700 km² (1,040 mi ²).

Rwanda has a tropical climate with hot weather throughout the year. The mountainous and northern regions are typically cooler than the low-lying areas in the east. The wet season typically lasts from March until April or May. A second rainy season lasts from mid-October to mid-December.

The country is unofficially a one-party state. Although elections are hosted in Rwanda, they are manipulated in several ways, such as banning opposition parties and arresting critics. The president of Rwanda serves as the head of state, and the prime minister serves as the head of government.
