Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa. Niger borders the country to the north, Chad and Cameroon border it to the east, and Benin to the west. It’s also bordered by the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean to the south.

Abuja, located in the Federal Capital Territory, is Nigeria’s capital. Aside from this federal territory, the country consists of 36 states, including Niger State, the largest state by land area. Each state has its own government, along with the national government. Nigeria’s president serves as the head of state, head of government, and head of the multi-party state.
Many tourists visit Nigeria for its wildlife and wildlife reserves, including the Cross River National Park and Yankari National Park. Calabar, the capital of the Cross River State, is often considered Nigeria’s tourist capital. Other major cities include Lagos (Nigeria’s largest city), Kano, and Ibadan.
Nigeria has three main climates: a tropical rainforest climate in the south, a hot and semi-arid climate in the north, and a tropical savannah climate in the central regions. A large portion of southern Nigeria has lost its forests due to development and increased population. The area between the Niger and theย Cross Rivers is now largely grassland.
Nigeria was colonized by the British in 1884 and was a British territory until it gained independence in 1960. Between 1960 and 1963,ย Nigeriaย was a sovereign state, with Queen Elizabeth II as the country’s sole monarch. The monarchy was abolished in 1963 and replaced with a president who serves as head of state.
More than 500 languages are spoken in Nigeria, although the only official language is English (a remnant of Nigeria’s colonial past). Some of the major native languages include Hausa, Yoruba,ย and Igbo.
