Namibia, officially theย Republic of Namibia, is a country in Southern Africa. The country shares land borders with Zambia and Angola to the north and Botswana to the east. South Africa borders Namibia to the south and east. The Atlantic Ocean borders Namibia to the west. The Zambezi River separates the country from Zimbabwe; the two countries are separated by just 200 meters of the Botswanan right bank.

Windhoek, located in the Khomas Highland plateau area of central Namibia, is the country’s capital. The area was first settled in 1840, although the settlement had disappeared by 1873. A second settlement was established in 1890 by the Germans, coming after Namibia has become became a German protectorate in 1884 as part of German South West Africa. South Africa occupied the area during the First World War and the country remained under South African rule until 1990, when Namibia gained independence.

One of the main geographic regions in Namibia is the Central Plateau, which runs from north to south. The Namib desert is a coastal region that spans around 2,000 kilometers through Namibia, Angola, and northwest South Africa. The Kalahari desert is a semi-arid sandy savanna that mainly covers Botswana but also stretches into Namibia and South Africa.

The climate in Namibia is hot and dry, with sparse rainfall. The majority of the country is arid or semi-arid; Namibia has the least rainfall of any country in sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the country relies upon groundwater, seawater desalination, and recycled water.

Namibia is a democraticย republic with a president who serves as both the head of state and head of government. The president is elected by popular vote, with each term lasting five years.
