Mauritania, officially theย Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in Northwest Africa. The Atlantic Ocean borders Mauritania to the west, and Western Sahara borders it to the north and northwest. France colonized Mauritania in 1904 and incorporated it into French West Africa. The country gained its independence in November 1960 and became a member of the United Nations in the following year.

Nouakchott, located in the southwest of the country on the Atlantic coast, is the capital of Mauritania. The city is home to a large portion of the country’s population. Other major cities in the country include Nรฉma and Nouadhibou.

The longest river in the country is the Senegal River, which has a total length of 1,641 kilometers (1,020 miles) and flows through neighboring Mali and Senegal.

There is a presidential democracy in Mauritania, although there have been several military coups since its independence. The president serves as the head of state, and the prime minister serves as the head of government.

Mauritania is rich in natural resources such as iron ore, copper, and petroleum. The country’s main exports include fish products and metal.
