The country was under French colonial rule from 1892 until 1960. There have been two military coups in the 21st century, one in March 2012 and a second in December 2012. Until these coups, Mali was a democratic republic where the president served as head of state and appointed the prime minister, who served as head of government. However, there has been political instability in the following decades.

Mali has a hot desert climate, with a dry season (March to June), a rainy season (June to September), and a cold season (October to February). The desert in northern Mali rarely has rainfall and is extremely hot, while the country’s central region has a hot semi-arid climate.

Most of Mali is flat, with vast plateaus, although the southern region is relatively hilly. The highest point in Mali is Mount Hombori Tondo, which is located in the Mopti Region. The mountain has an elevation of 1,155 meters. The Niger River, which has a total length of 4,180 kilometers, flows for 1,693 km through Mali.
