The country is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry after its capital, Conakry. This is to distinguish Guinea from similarly named territories such as Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.

Between 1891 and 1958, Guinea was a French colony. As a French colonial possession, Guinea was called French Guinea, although its exact borders changed over time.

Guinea has over 320 km of coastline, with various remote beaches and offshore islands. The country’s highest point is Mount Nimba, which has an elevation of 1,752 meters (5,748 ft). The mountain stands in the Nimba Range on the borders of Guinea, Liberia, and Côte d’Ivoire.

There are four distinct regions in Guinea: Maritime Guinea (region bordering the Atlantic Ocean), the Middle Guinea highlands, the northeastern Upper Guinea savanna region, and the tropical forests in the southeastern Guinée forestière.

Guinea has a hot, humid climate. Most of the country falls in the tropical zone, although Southeast Guinea is in the subequatorial zone. The country’s rainy season is usually from June to November, and the dry season lasts from December until May.

Guinea is a democratic republic. The country’s president serves as both the head of state and the head of government.
