The country’s capital and largest city is Bissau. A major port, it is vital to the country’s economy, which largely depends on agriculture. Fish, nuts, rubber, and palm oil are among its major exports.

Guinea-Bissau’s terrain is largely flat and low-lying. Wetlands dominate the landscape, with coastal swamps extending into the interior parts of the country and six main rivers flowing through it. Dense tropical rainforest covers the interior, giving way to savanna and mountains in the southeast. With an elevation of 262 meters (860 feet), Monte Torin is the country’s highest point.

The climate of Guinea-Bissau is tropical, with high temperatures and humidity all year round. The country has two seasons, a rainy season and a dry season. The dry season is from November through May, and the rainy season is from June through October. During the wet season, rainfall is heavy and can cause flooding, especially during July through September. The dry season is influenced by the Harmattan, a dry, dusty wind that blows from the Sahara. The hottest months are February through May, though the coast is cooler than the interior.

Guinea-Bissau is a democratic republic with a President who serves as the head of the state and a Prime Minister as the head of the government. Despite this, the military has repeatedly interfered in the country’s leadership since 1994, when the first multi-party elections were held.
