Eritrea is a country in Eastern Africa. It shares land borders with Djibouti to the south, Ethiopia to the south and west, and Sudan to the west and north. It has a long coastline on the Red Sea to the east. The country’s territory also includes more than a hundred islands in the Red Sea. These islands form the Dahlak Archipelago and part of the Hanish Archipelago.

Eritrea’s capital city is Asmara, which is in the mountainous central region. The port towns of Massawa and Asseb are two of the country’s other important urban areas.

The highest mountain in Eritrea is Emba Soira, located in the Eritrean Highlands, 135 kilometers south of the capital. The country’s other mountain range is the Danakil Alps in the southeast. It includes Nabro, an active volcano. In addition to mountains and coastline, Eritrea’s landscape consists of sub-tropical rainforests, cliffs, and canyons.

Eritrea’s climate ranges from tropical desert in the east to mild semi-arid in the central mountains to tropical semi-arid in the west. June through September can be wet due to the southwest monsoon from Ethiopia.

Eritrea is a single-party presidential republic. The country’s only legal political party is the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ). It has a President, who is both the head of the state and the head of the government. The President is also the commander-in-chief of the Eritrean Defence Forces.
