Bioko, the largest of the countryโ€™s islands, lies off the coast of Cameroon in the Gulf of Guinea and is the location of the capital city, Malabo. Once completed, the city of Ciudad de la Paz on the mainland will replace Malabo as the capital.

Equatorial Guineaโ€™s other islands are Corisco, Elobey Chico, and Elobey Grande in Corsico Bay, south of the mainland, and Annobรณn Island off the coast of Gabon.

The Congo rainforest โ€” the second-largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon โ€” dominates the landscape of mainland Equatorial Guinea. Bioko is also heavily forested and largely volcanic, with three volcanoes covering most of the island. One of these, Pico de Santa Isabel, is the highest point in the country. Annobรณnโ€™s landscape is also volcanic and forested. The islands of Annobรณn and Bioko form part of the Cameroon Line, a long chain of volcanoes that extends toward Lake Chad on mainland Africa.

Equatorial Guinea has a tropical or equatorial climate, with high temperatures and humidity all year round. It has two distinct seasons (wet and dry) and is cloudy for most of the year.

Equatorial Guinea is a presidential republic with a President who is the head of the state and the head of the government. A Prime Minister is appointed by the President to coordinate certain government activities.
