Democratic Republic of the Congo

Also known as โ€œDR Congoโ€ or simply โ€œDRCโ€, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a country in Central (Middle) Africa. It is surrounded by the countries of the Central African Republic and South Sudan to the north, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania to the east, Zambia to the east and south, Angola to the south, and the Cabinda exclave of Angola and the Republic of the Congo to the west. It has a tiny coastline on the South Atlantic Ocean to the west.

After Algeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the second-largest country in Africa by area and the 11th-largest in the world. It is one of only 13 countries on the equator, with one-third of its landmass lying in the Northern Hemisphere and two-thirds lying in the Southern Hemisphere.ย 

The countryโ€™s capital and largest city is Kinshasa. The city is situated on the south bank of the Congo River.

The landscape of the Democratic Republic of the Congo consists of many notable features, including the Congo Rainforest, the worldโ€™s second-largest rainforest after the Amazon. Two of the worldโ€™s ten longest rivers flow through the Democratic Republic of the Congo: the Nile River (the longest river in the world), and the Congo River. Three of Africaโ€™s ten longest rivers also flow through the country. Four of the African Great Lakes lie along the countryโ€™s eastern border: Lake Albert, Lake Edward, Lake Kivu, and Lake Tanganyika.

Due to its location on the equator, the climate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is largely equatorial. It receives a large amount of rainfall and experiences more thunderstorms than any other country in the world. For the most part, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is hot, humid, and cloudy.
