The country was part of French West Africa from 1896 until 1958 when it became a self-governing colony. Burkina Faso gained full independence in 1960. The country now has a prime minister who serves as head of government and a president who serves as head of state.

Ouagadougou, located in the center of the country, is the country’s capital. Other major cities in Burkina Faso include Bobo-Dioulasso, Koudougou, and Saaba.

Burkina Faso has a tropical climate with a long, dry season (November to March) and a short, rainy season (May to October). The Sahel, one of the three main climatic zones in the country, is a largely dry, tropical savanna in the north of the country. The second main climatic zone is the Sudan-Sahel region, which is a semi-arid transitional zone between the humid savannas and the dry Sahara desert. The Sudan-Guinea zone is a tropical savanna in the southwest.

There are two main physical areas in Burkina Faso: a peneplain (large flat ground formed by erosion) and a sandstone massif (principal mountain mass) in the south of the country. One of these mountains, Mount Tenakourou, is the highest point in Burkina Faso and has an elevation of 747 meters (2,451 ft).

The country has three main rivers: the Black Volta, the Red Volta, and the White Volta. The longest river is the Black Volta, which flows through Burkina Faso for 1,352 kilometers (840 miles). Groundwater is the country’s main drinking water supply, particularly in rural areas.
